      George Orwell's book "1984" was first published in 1949. In retrospect, we look at the state of the United States and the world today and wonder that perhaps Orwell was some kind of modern-day prophet. There are certain words which seem to be misspelled; they are so in the original (Old British spelling), and they have been preserved intact. Other misspellings and minor punctuation have been corrected to make reading easier. The text font has been enlarged to 5-point Times New Roman, to make it easier for the visually impaired, and we've provided a high-contrast background and self-sizing text boxes so that you don't have to do any horizontal-scrolling on most PCs and PDAs.
